Beauclair has provided much of the data behind a new Centre for Cities report, “Cities Outlook 2022”, which was launched on Monday 25th January.
This year the report looks in-depth at the state of UK high streets to get a sense of the short-term impact of the pandemic on Britain’s town and city centres and the long-term consequences and implications this has for the Government’s levelling up agenda. Much of the data behind the research was provided by Beauclair, including the analysis on the number of weeks of trading lost per city and where customers are coming from when shopping in cities.
The report shows five surprising trends:
- Online shopping surged at first, and then stalled
- Pubs and restaurants were not the hardest hit; the biggest high street casualty was fashion
- The suburbs are not experiencing a boost at the expense of city centres
- High streets in the weaker places struggled the least
- ‘Returning to normal’ might not be possible or desirable
The report has been covered in The Guardian, The Telegraph, on BBC News, Sky News and ITV News, and in The Yorkshire Post as well as a host of other regional and local media outlets.
